About Capstone
Capstone was Elk's premium laminated shingle with a slate look: a double-layer construction that gave a deep, blocky shadow line, sold for steep-pitch roofs with a 40-year limited warranty and a 110 mph limited wind warranty. Elk marketed a flexible asphalt formula (Formula FLX) for easier handling.
Elk was acquired by GAF in 2007. GAF retired the Elk brand and its product names, and no Elk Capstone has been manufactured since. GAF's current designer lines are different products, not continuations.
How to recognize it
From the street: a laminated shingle with wide, squared-off tabs and a heavy shadow line, reading more like slate than like a standard architectural shingle. On a roof that is now fifteen to twenty-plus years old, expect granule loss on the south and west slopes.
Up close: two layers with the top layer cut into broad slate-style tabs. The back of Elk shingles often carries ELK or GAF-ELK embossing, and any leftover wrapper names the product.
Wind damage usually shows as creased or lifted tabs along the top-layer cut lines.
What to photograph
- Whole front slope from the curb, straight on, in daylight.
- A close photo of three or four courses showing the tab width and shadow line, with a tape measure in frame if you can.
- The back of any loose piece, looking for ELK or GAF-ELK lettering.
- Any wrapper, invoice or roofing paperwork from the original install.
- Damaged areas with the slope they are on noted.

Can it be repaired with matching material?
No new Capstone exists. Whether reserved stock remains anywhere is answered by sending a physical sample to an independent lab, which is also what carriers rely on. Matt orders that report before the adjuster meeting rather than after.
When no stock exists, the repair conversation becomes a matching conversation: how much of the roof can be repaired with a different product and still look and perform like one roof.
What the manufacturer offers now
GAF's current designer shingles (Camelot II, Slateline, Grand Sequoia) are different products with different tab geometry and color blends. They are candidates for a full-slope or full-roof replacement, not drop-in repair matches.
If the roof is replaced, the homeowner's insurer may list impact-resistant options that earn a premium discount; the exact product has to match the carrier's list before it is ordered.
Where Matt sees it
Matt has identified Capstone on homes in Edmond and in north and central Oklahoma City. The roofs are scattered rather than clustered, which is why identification from the street matters more than the ZIP code. Homes roofed with it in the 2000s are now at the age where Oklahoma hail and wind find them.
Insurance claim, manufacturer warranty, or a cash repair
Wind or hail damage is a claim against your homeowner policy. Matt photographs the damage slope by slope, sends a sample for independent identification when the product is in question, and builds the scope from what the evidence supports. Whether the outcome is a repair or a replacement is decided case by case from your policy and the documentation, not from the word discontinued.
Elk's original warranty obligations passed to GAF. A warranty question on an Elk roof goes to GAF with the original purchase or installation records. A manufacturer warranty review is a separate process from an insurance claim. It starts with the original purchase or installation records and the manufacturer's own inspection, and each claim is reviewed on its own facts. Matt can document the roof condition for it; he cannot promise how the manufacturer will decide or what, if anything, the homeowner will pay.
For a few damaged pieces with no storm and no defect pattern, a straightforward paid repair with the closest available material is often the sensible call. Matt tells you when that is the case and what the repair will look like from the ground before he does it.
Elk Capstone questions
GAF owns Elk now. Can GAF supply matching Capstone?
No. GAF retired the Elk product names after the 2007 acquisition and does not make Capstone. A repair depends on whether any reserved stock still exists, which a lab report on a sample will state.
Does a retired product mean my whole roof gets replaced?
Not by itself. It means the documentation has to answer three things: what the product is, whether matching material exists, and what the damage actually is. Sometimes that ends in a repair, sometimes in a slope or full replacement. The evidence decides it, not the label.
