I started as the tear-off guy. 35 years later, I’m still on the roof.

My name is Matt Taylor, and I own Roofing 101. I want to tell you how I got here, because it’s the whole reason you can trust me with your home.

Thirty-five years ago I started at the very bottom of this trade — I was the tear-off guy. That’s the job nobody wants: up on the roof in the Oklahoma heat, ripping off old, rotten shingles and hauling them down to the dumpster all day long. It’s hot, it’s heavy, and it’s where you learn what a roof is really made of, because you see every layer of it come apart in your hands.

I didn’t stay the tear-off guy. Over the years I worked every position there is. I set underlayment. I learned to cut and bend flashing so a valley would never leak. I ran metal panels, laid tile, hung slate, welded flat-roof membrane. I learned how to read an attic and trace a leak back to where the water actually gets in. I dealt with insurance adjusters and learned how to document a storm claim honestly. If it can be done to a roof, I’ve done it with my own two hands.

Somewhere along the way I figured out why so many people are afraid of roofers. It’s because the industry separates the person who sells the roof from the person who builds it. A friendly salesman shows up, signs you, and then a crew of strangers you’ve never met does the actual work — fast, because they’re paid by the job. Corners get cut where you can’t see them, and by the time it leaks, the salesman is long gone.

I built Roofing 101 to be the opposite of that. There is no salesman. There is no corporate office. There’s me. When you call, you get me. When I quote your roof, I’m the one who’s going to build it. And when I’m up there doing the flashing and the decking and the details nobody else bothers with, it’s because I know my name is on it — the company, the license, all of it.

That’s where “zero callbacks” comes from. It’s not a warranty gimmick. It’s just what happens when the owner does the work and refuses to leave a job he wouldn’t want on his own house. In 35 years I’ve learned that the roof doesn’t care how good your sales pitch was. It only cares whether the person who installed it knew what they were doing and took the time to do it right.
