About Belmont
Belmont is CertainTeed's luxury slate-look laminated shingle, an 18 by 36 inch fiberglass-mat shingle built with random tabs on the top layer so the roof reads like quarried slate. The IR version adds a reinforcement on the underside of the mat to reach a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating.
In Matt's experience nearly every Belmont roof installed in Oklahoma is the IR version, because the Class 4 rating is what earned the insurance discount that justified the price. That is a field observation, not a manufacturer statistic.
How to recognize it
Thick, blocky tabs with squared edges and deep shadow lines. It looks like a heavier version of a standard architectural shingle and lighter than Grand Manor.
You cannot tell Belmont from Belmont IR from the ground. The difference is in the mat, so the wrapper, the invoice or a lab sample is what proves the variant.
Wind damage tends to show as individual tabs creased or torn along the top-layer cut lines.
What to photograph
- Whole slope from the street, plus a close photo of three or four courses to show the tab pattern.
- Any creased, lifted or missing tabs, photographed before anyone re-seals them.
- The original material invoice or the wrapper if you have either. For a manufacturer review these matter more than the photos.

Can it be repaired with matching material?
Treat repair material as an open question until it is checked for your specific roof. Some suppliers still list Belmont, but a listing can be remaining inventory rather than new production, and color lots drift over the years. A sample to an independent lab settles whether a reasonable match exists.
What the manufacturer offers now
Belmont and Grand Manor are visually related (Matt describes Belmont as Grand Manor's little brother). Homeowners who could not get Grand Manor during its 2021 production pause were sometimes moved to Belmont. They are not interchangeable for repairs.
Belmont IR appears on major carriers' impact-resistant product lists. The generic word Belmont on a certificate is not enough; the IR designation has to be there.
Where Matt sees it
Matt has worked Belmont and Belmont IR roofs in the higher-end Oklahoma City, Edmond and Arcadia-area neighborhoods where the product was sold as a slate look with a hail discount.
Several of those homeowners have asked Matt for their original material invoice so they could open a manufacturer warranty review. That is the reason this page separates the warranty route from the insurance route.
Insurance claim, manufacturer warranty, or a cash repair
Wind or hail damage is a claim against your homeowner policy. Matt photographs the damage slope by slope, sends a sample for independent identification when the product is in question, and builds the scope from what the evidence supports. Whether the outcome is a repair or a replacement is decided case by case from your policy and the documentation, not from the word discontinued.
CertainTeed's limited warranty (SureStart) is a manufacturer process, not an insurance claim, and not a recall. It starts with proof of purchase and the installation date, then a manufacturer inspection, and each roof is reviewed on its own facts. Matt can document the roof condition for it, but the claim belongs to the homeowner and the decision belongs to the manufacturer. Do not mix the two routes. A storm claim to your insurer and a product-condition review by the manufacturer answer different questions and need different evidence. Filing one does not automatically block the other, but the documentation has to be honest in both.
For a few damaged pieces with no storm and no defect pattern, a straightforward paid repair with the closest available material is often the sensible call. Matt tells you when that is the case and what the repair will look like from the ground before he does it.

Is Belmont discontinued?
We are not going to tell you yes or no from a web page. Older manufacturer pages and some supplier listings still show Belmont, and listings can reflect inventory rather than production. For your roof the useful questions are which variant you have, whether a matching shingle can actually be sourced, and whether the condition points to a storm claim, a manufacturer review, or a plain repair. Those get answered with photos, records and a sample.
My Belmont tabs are tearing but there was no big storm. What now?
That is the situation where a manufacturer warranty review is worth looking at before an insurance claim. Matt photographs the failure pattern, you locate the invoice, and the review goes to CertainTeed, which decides it case by case. If a storm did cause it, that is an insurance claim instead, and the evidence has to show the storm.
