Watch for downed power lines, and if you see a sagging ceiling or bulging drywall indoors, keep people out of that room, because trapped water can bring a ceiling down. If water is actively coming in, cut power to that area if you can do it safely and move belongings out of the way.

Next, limit the damage inside without doing anything risky. Put buckets and towels under active drips, pull furniture and electronics clear, and lay down plastic to protect flooring. If part of the roof is clearly open and rain is still coming, a temporary tarp can save you thousands in interior damage — but that’s a job for someone who can get up there safely, not a homeowner on a wet slope in the wind.
