Insurance Claims

How do roof insurance claims work in Oklahoma?

Roof insurance claims sound complicated, but the process follows a fairly predictable path, and understanding it up front takes most of the stress out of it. Matt Taylor has walked central Oklahoma homeowners through claims for 35 years, and the biggest thing he tells people is this: a claim is a documentation exercise. The better the damage is proven and the more organized you are, the smoother it goes. Every policy is different, so always confirm the specifics with your own insurer — what follows is the general shape of how it works.

It usually starts with an inspection. Before you call your insurance company, it’s worth having a qualified roofer look at the roof so you actually know whether there’s legitimate storm damage and whether it’s likely to exceed your deductible. There’s no point filing a claim over damage that would cost less to fix than your deductible. If the damage is real and significant, you file the claim with your insurer, who assigns it a claim number and schedules a field adjuster to come out.

Next comes the adjuster’s visit. The adjuster inspects the roof and writes an estimate of what they believe the covered damage is worth. It genuinely helps to have your roofer present for that inspection so the two professionals can look at the same shingles together — it cuts down on missed damage and back-and-forth. The insurer then sends you a claim summary, and this is where terms like deductible and depreciation come in. Most policies today pay in stages: they first send the value of the damaged roof minus depreciation and minus your deductible, and they hold back the depreciation amount.

That held-back money is called recoverable depreciation, and on most replacement-cost policies you get it back after the work is completed and the final invoice is submitted — which is why you don’t simply pocket the first check and skip the repair. Your out-of-pocket cost, in the end, is generally your deductible. Be aware that it is illegal in Oklahoma for a contractor to waive, absorb, or rebate your deductible, and any roofer offering to do so is a serious red flag about how they do everything else.

The whole thing goes best when you stay organized: keep your claim number, dates, photos, and every piece of paperwork in one place, and don’t sign over your claim rights to anyone. Matt works alongside your adjuster, documents the damage thoroughly, and gives you honest pricing so you can see exactly where your deductible and the insurance proceeds are going.
